History

The store was originally built in the early 1960's by then owner, Bob Cavin. At the time, State Route 17 cut right through the town as many highways did before the interstate system was finished. Mesa Grocery, as it was called then was a full service store serving the growing population. The store changed hands 3 times before coming under its current ownership. Some owners made improvements, and some kept it pretty much status quo. During the 90's and early 2000's it served mostly as a convenience/camp ground type store.

Current Operation

Easter Time 2011 094In August 2006, current owners Charles and Janice Grimm purchased 'Mesa Grocery' and renamed it JC's (Janice & Charles') Mesa Grocery and Deli. The store underwent a significant transformation returning the store to its roots as a full service grocery store.

The store now boasts a fresh produce department, local produce in season, a 'nearly' full line grocery department, gift cards from major retailers, free wireless internet, hot deli, 'made to order' lunches, fresh sandwiches, expanded beverage selection, fresh flowers at major holidays, and much more.

Charles oversees the operation, and has been in the grocery business over a quarter century. A master grocer, having learned directly and indirectly from one of the foremost Independant grocers in the region, has brought his skills of serving people and merchandising to the North Franklin area. Charles has won numerous customer service awards and was nominated in the grocery checker division in King TV's 'Best of Western Washington' awards. He currently serves as chairman of the City of Mesa's Planning Commission, and is also on the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church in Connell. Charles teaches high school and junior high Sunday School and enjoys any opportunity to invest in the lives of others by speaking at other churches, youth groups, motivational speaking, and even business consulting. His favorite pastimes include theology, philosophy, politics, hiking, yard work, and spending time with family.

Janice has more of a limited role at the store at this time as she is busy as a stay at home mom. She has a background in education, having completed her bachelor of science in education at Western Baptist College and receiving her special education credential from The Evergreen State College. She is currently certified to teach in Washington State. Janice enjoys using her free time artistically by drawing and painting. She also finds joy in training her children and serving at church.

Charles and Janice have 4 'younger' children; Michael, Abigail, Samuel, and Rachel.
